Comparing Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement

When you become eligible for Medicare, you'll generally choose between two main paths: Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Original Medicare combined with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan and a separate Part D plan.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies Medicare-related. These plans often combine your hospital (Part A), medical (Part B), and usually prescription drug (Part D) coverage into one plan. Many plans include extra benefits like dental, vision, or hearing services. These plans have their own rules, networks, and cost-sharing.

Medicare Supplement plans, on the other hand, work with Original Medicare. Original Medicare covers about 80% of your Part B costs, and a Medigap plan can help cover some or all of the remaining 20%. You'll typically need to purchase a separate Part D plan for prescription drug coverage. Medigap plans allow you to see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, without network restrictions.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Needs

The choice between these options depends on your personal health needs, budget, and preferences. Some people prefer the all-in-one approach of a Medicare Advantage plan, especially if they value the extra benefits. Others prefer the flexibility and predictable out-of-pocket costs that often come with Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan. As an independent agent in Miami, I can help you review the plans available to you and discuss how each type might fit your situation.
